Cruise and Holmes celebrate the announcement by Americaâs scientists, while British Prime Minister Tony Blair performs a celebratory robot dance for no discernable reason cientology is in the news again this week, and not just because some green reporter made the mistake of sticking a microphone in front of Tom Cruise again. In a shocking revelation that has rocked the media world, fourteen year old actress and Cruise arm candy Katie Holmes has converted to the oddball religion, leaving the pope speechless and the entire Roman Catholic Church in disarray. But sheâs not the only one, and this time itâs not only some weirdly shallow celebrity joining the ranks. In a lesser-publicized footnote, Americaâs entire scientific community has jumped on the bandwagon, too.

cientology is in the news again this week, and not just because some green reporter made the mistake of sticking a microphone in front of Tom Cruise again. In a lesser-publicized footnote, Americaâs entire scientific community has jumped on the bandwagon, too.
âItâs a natural fit, really,â explained Ralf Menu of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. âScience? Scientology? Iâm actually surprised this didnât come up earlier. I mean, from all available evidence, itâs really quite obvious that we exist on the seventh ring of the Dunabi, concentric to the Twelfth Dimensional Scrobang. No one seriously debates this.â
âI have to admit, Iâd been curious about Scientology ever since I saw that commercial they used to play for Diatnetics,â admitted American Association of Cereal Chemists head Dabney Thomas, because he had to. âYou know, with the volcano thatâs all erupting and shit and answering questions like âWill I see my dog in heaven? Page 47.â Ever since I saw that I was pretty interested. Because I had a dog when I was a kid, but he was a real bastard so Iâm really curious if he got into heaven or not.â
The announcement comes at a crucial time for the funky techno-religion, founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard in 1951 as a beautiful tax dodge. Scientology has been struggling for credibility after years of reports that it charges members tens of thousands of dollars to reveal its deepest spiritual secrets, all of which turn out to read like a really horrible John Travolta movie. But the concensus seems to be that a lack of credibility is the price one pays for following a religion founded by a man famous for making up implausible tales full of far-fetched ideas and fantasies designed to sell books.
âItâs sort of like having a weight loss program founded by Cookie Monster,â mused religious scholar Barnaby Told, who actually does botanical research but is also quite religious, thereby qualifying him for the title. âThatâs a tough credibility gap to span.â
This latest conversion will likely change the way that millions think about Scientology, however, and the agreement of Americaâs scientists might help as well. But not everyone is thrilled with Holmesâ epic conversion from Catholicism, about which Vatican officials say the pope feels personally betrayed.
âThe pope has been listless and non-responsive all week,â explained Vatican spokesperson Arnold Grubb. âHeâs not even into mini-golf as much as usual. He seems kind of heartbroken, honestly. I hope sheâs worth it, Tom.â the commune news doesnât doubt that a tyrannical ruler named Xenu wiped out his own 76-world confederation of planets with hydrogen bombs after paralyzing billions of people and tying them to volcanoes 75 billion years ago, the problem we have with Scientology is that dude Hubbard had blue lips. Creep-y. Ivana Folger-Balzac was captured and deprogrammed after filing this story, not because we feared contamination by Scientologist ideology, we just hoped it might make her less of a giant bitch.

Where the Fuck's Jesus? As you may have heard from the local townsfolk, or from those smartalec kids who hang out in front of the TruValue over on fifth and Wayne, I've dedicated my life to a search for Jesus. For years I have searched far and wide, from the highest peaks to the deepest valleys, deep under the polar icecap and at the bottom of the mariana trench. I've looked in closets, I've looked under rugs, picnic tables and once even inside the girls' dressing room at a Foxy Boxing match. I've scoured the bus stops, the zoos and the trendy bars of our fair land and all of my searching has left me with but one question: Where the fuck's Jesus?
I mean, maybe I heard wrong, but he did say he was coming back, didn't he? I seem to remember something along those lines, maybe it was "Save my seat dude, I gotta whiz!" or maybe it was something a bit more poetic, but I was left with the distinct impression that he'd be draggin' his sorry ass back here sooner or later. And I'm about out of places to look.
Over the years there have been times when I thought I'd found him, but impostor Jesusi they were, every last one of them. Bogus Jesusitos. I was fairly sure I'd found him back in 1984 but then that guy ended up smoking all of my weed and sleeping with my sister, so I had to throw him out. I know, I know, whatever you do unto the least of my brothers, yadda yadda yadda. Well, in that case, Jesus got a Birkenstock crammed halfway up his ass that day.
And don't even...

I know, I know, whatever you do unto the least of my brothers, yadda yadda yadda. Well, in that case, Jesus got a Birkenstock crammed halfway up his ass that day.
And don't even get me started about latino guys named Jesus. I fell for that one a few dozen times too many and even spent most of the late 80's running guns down in Panama with Jesus and his brother Chuy. He may not have been a member of the holy trinity, but lord knows the real Jesus never saw that kind of money curing lepers and the blind and all that noise.
Probably my worst near-Jesus experience was when I thought I'd found him back in '79, but it turned out the guy was really the Phoenix Kindergarten Killer, that guy who was abducting all the little kids and filling Tylenol bottles with their teeth, then sneaking the bottles back onto the shelves at K-Mart. I very nearly had to do some jail time over that one, when the police discovered that he was making muppet dolls out of their corpses and putting on a live-action variety show in my basement. Hell, I just thought the savior had some strange friends, y'know? I mean, who questions the son of God, anyway? You want to end up out in a cornfield with your head on a jack-in-the-box or something?
I'm sad to say, it looks like my latest potential Jesus is turning out to be a big disappointment as well. No corpse-puppets or anything (so far) but all he seems to do is lay on the couch and watch Happy Days. I also think he's been chowing down on my Chips Ahoy while I'm at work, so unless he starts turning water to wine some time soon I'm going to have to ask him if he can stay with his sister.
Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of this shit. If Jesus was going to take this goddamn long, he could have at least phoned ahead to tell us not to wait up. Personally, I'm petitioning my church to change their daily prayer from "Our lord in heaven who art merciful and kind" to "Dude! You fucking fall in or something?" I suggest you do the same. º Last Column: When's God Gonna Quit Bustin' My Balls?º more columns

Volume 7Dear commune:
I have a bone to pick with you, commune. It's about time someone stood up and stated the obvious: the commune's mascot, Poopey Chalupa, is a shameful and offensive stereotype that cheapens, exploits and degrades the fine heritage of the people of Mexico. And if you're reading this out loud, you'd best be sure to pronounce that "Mey-heeco" to avoid further damage to these fine people.
Shame on you, commune: this kind of schoolyard tomfoolery is beneath you and frankly I expected more from the publication that has brought us the wit and wisdom of Tom Turkel's "Home Town" for more than 20 years. You may consider this formal notice of the cancellation of my subscription.
Beth Romerlaud Pierce Mountain, Delaware
Dear Beth:
The commune shares your outrage at the exploitation of helpless minorities, unless they're on our payroll. No one here will soon forget the intolerance and hatred bred by shows like Taxi and Perfect Strangers in years past, and we have no interest in breeding further misconceptions, or rabbits. However, we regret to inform you that Poopey Chalupa does not work here; in actuality he is the mascot for El ComĂșn, the newsletter of the annual Mexico City street bazaar. Have you seen our mascot, lady? We'd kill to get that cute little sombrero-wearing rascal.
Furthermore, Tom Turkel's "Home Town" has never appeared on the commune, and it never will; not...

Furthermore, Tom Turkel's "Home Town" has never appeared on the commune, and it never will; not so long as he keeps putting on airs like he's better than everyone and has a special need for medical and dental coverage.
Lastly: though we don't sell subscriptions to the commune, we'd be happy to cancel yours and send a bill immediately. Thanks for your letter, and we'll be sending a box of rabbits to help ease your liberal guilt. Feel free to keep them as pets or eat them or whatever bizarre kinds of shit you people do.
the commune
Dear commune: Yeah, I've got a question for you. If all that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream, then why the hell won't my Chevy start? Normally when I have a dream it's something like I've got a chicken head where my penis is supposed to be or my mother-in-law is trying to give my dog an enema. Never anything about a blown head gasket or scored pistons. What gives? John John Fridley Elmwood, TexasDear John John:
Like most teenage English majors, it appears that you've confused poetry with reality. If life were truly a dream within a dream, your letter would have been from the commune's ex-girlfriend, confessing that she really did steal the commune's CDs and the commune's Notre Dame sweatshirt. There is an upside, however: that bird that's been following you around isn't really a nagging reminder of your lost love, it just wants some of the beef jerky in your pocket.
the commune
Dear commune: I'm dick and tired of hearing the stereotype that all men are obsessed with sex and that they can't help but think about tit every ten seconds. Sure, some guys may be certified hooter hounds, but that doesn't mean the chest of us are just helpless dogs, salivating at the taut of glimpsing naked female flesh. It's unfair to hump us in with that fist group, when we as a sex have cum so far. I'm a head-blooded American male, boner of a healthy sex drive, but I ride myself on being capable of suck things as intelligent thought and higher brainal function, and I think moist men are, ass well. I thrust that we're in agreement on this topless. Kent Boobner Knobjob, New YorkDear Kent:
You have a good point there, Kent. Good fuck with your crusade, and spank you for riding.
the commune Editor's Note: the commune news would like to issue a warm greeting to our new scab tiny-type writers, even though it feels kind of weird to issue a warm greeting to yourself. But what the hell, they pay better than Stride Rite.º Last Column: Volume 6º more columns

| North Korea Pissed Their Real-Life Hunger Games Nowhere Near as Popular as Movie BY Beck Steinman 12/13/2004 Mousey MenThe sun descriptively climbed under the clouds, playing peek-a-boo with California as it squatted behind the distant hills, to take a cosmic dump. Joe and Britches came to a cool glen, which is not slang for a guy named Glen who is "holding," but instead a lake area with a refreshing pond. They washed their muddy hands and laughed loudly. Then they drank the water they had just washed their muddy hands in, which is gross.
"We're sure living the high life now, ain't we Joe?" said Britches.
Laughing even louder, Joe agreed. "We sure are, Britches. I got a good feeling about California. The fruits on the trees is so ripe they fall right into yer hands, just like everyone done told us. Yep, I can't see ever running into any miserable irony in a land so gosh-darned...

Then they drank the water they had just washed their muddy hands in, which is gross.

Laughing even louder, Joe agreed. "We sure are, Britches. I got a good feeling about California. The fruits on the trees is so ripe they fall right into yer hands, just like everyone done told us. Yep, I can't see ever running into any miserable irony in a land so gosh-darned bee-yoo-ti-ful."
"I loves it when you speak phonetically, Joe," grinned Britches. He was an idiot man-child, but don't tell him I said so, if he ever asks you. I'm not trying to sound mean, it's just a fair description. A big old dipshit, dumb as a bag of Quayles, but with a kinder heart than you ever laid eyes on, assuming you're in the business of going around ripping kind hearts out of people's chests.
His partner, traveling partner, nothing funny going on, Joe, was a short man, who blamed his height on account of his legs being so close to the ground. Joe was the brains of their little group, of course, since the idea of very big men with brains is offensive to short men everywhere, like my publisher. He and Britches had been traveling together for months, and they found it a good partnership. Joe was always there to count Britches' money, so the bosses didn't short-change him anything, as well as help him with difficult tasks like putting his shoes on his feet, instead of his hands, which had helped Britches double his work output. In exchange, Britches was big and muscular, and good for getting Joe out of jams, like all the times he got into fights in bars loudly mouthing off about girl scouts.
Things had gotten tight, though, in the place they were fromâHawaii. So they headed east, to California, where they heard stories about all the beauty and pastoral, untouched nature, except for the dense smog. A fellow could get work there, too, people promised them. Joe and Britches loved to listen to liars, which was probably a fault they should have worried about. But for now, the worries were goneâthey had made it to California, and could hardly wait to find work picking fruit. They'd pick anything, for the right priceâapples, grapes, peaches, noses, what the hell.
Joe splashed the water on his grimy skin. He laughed even harder, nearly passing out. "Golly, Britches, if that water don't feel good after all that train dust. We should wash up good, 'fore we go looking for work. You smell like something crawled up your armpits and died."
"Just the one," said Britches, and he took a dead bird from his armpit.
Joe's smile dramatically vanished. "Now, Britchesâwhat did I tell you?"
"Just because a man has sex with another man, it don't mean he's gay."
"No, the thing about pets," shouted Joe, pointing with anger.
Britches slunk guiltily as he sat against a log, the dead bird in his hands. "I know⊠I can't have no pets. 'Cause I'm too big, and not all that intelligent. But I swear it, Joe, I was only trying to hug it! I wanted to hug it hard so I could show the baby bird how much I loves it! I did!"
"And hugging it killed that bird?"
"Well, it may have been moving a bit while I was trying to shove it up my behind, but judging by the way it felt, it was mostly dead already," said Britches.
Joe joined his traveling buddy on the log, putting an arm around one of his shouldersâhe was too big for a two-shouldered consolation. It wasn't his fault, Joe told himself. If great books had taught him anything, it was that it's never the fault of the idiot man-child.
