Not to nit-pick, but MST3K was originated by Joel Hodgson, Kevin Murphy and Jim Mallon. Jim and Kevin were both working at KTMA when they approached Joel to create a program, then hired local talent Trace and Josh Weinstein to round out the cast. I think we all know what happened next.
